RTS

RTS

Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) and Radio and Television Vojvodine (RTV) together form the system of public service broadcasters in Serbia.

The public media service of Radio-Televizija Srbije is a large company with about 2,500 employees working on four television channels, four radio stations and a portal. Viewers around the world can access the Planeta multimedia internet platform to watch all programmes produced by RTS. The music company PGP RTS, the music production department of RTS with a symphony orchestra, a jazz band and the children's choir Kolibri also operate as part of RTS. RTS has its own exhibition space, the RTS Gallery, as well as a publishing activity, which prints and publishes books. The Research Centre, which monitors the ratings and audience of RTS, also operates within the institution.

The Law on Public Media Services, which regulates the management of RTS, was adopted in 2014. Like RTV Vojvodina (the PBS for the Vojvodina region), RTS has no formal owners, but is managed by a general manager and a nine-member board of directors. The 15-member Programme Council is supposed to act as an advisory body and represent the interests of the public. The Council of REM (Regulatory Body for Electronic Media) elects nine members of the Board of Directors for a period of five years following a public competition. The Board of Directors elects the Director General and the members of the Programme Council on the proposal of the Parliamentary Committee on Culture and Information. The election of RTS board members is usually criticised by the professional public because of the links of some members to the ruling party.

Other Influential People

Dragan Bujošević

General manager of RTS.
Before becoming director of RTS, Bujošević was known for being one of the most influential Serbian political journalists and a fighter against the repressive regime of Slobodan Milošević.
Since he became the head of RTS, he rarely appears in public and very rarely gives interviews to the media. Under his leadership, RTS became known for its editorial guidelines that are favourable to the current government. Critics of RTS point out that journalists ignore and actively avoid all controversial topics, especially those critical of the government, such as corruption and the rule of law. During the election campaigns, the favourable position of members of the ruling party is evident, while members of the opposition parties rarely appear in the program. Debates on the most urgent social issues are also missing.
Bujošević remains at the head of RTS despite having fulfilled the criteria for retirement.
