Global Media Registry was founded in 1996 by Veran Matic as an alternative source of independent news in the era of late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic. Since B92 radio station was banned several times, news portal was seen as a more secure and stable platform for critical voices. Its target audience was intellectuals and cosmopolitan, urban youngsters, opposed to the authoritarian and nationalist demagoguery of Slobodan Milosevic. Ever since it has been among top three most popular news portals in the country. As it was growing over the years, it introduced a variety of sub websites and pages, but was also among the first to launch mobile applications for Android and IOS.

In the past few years, following the sale to Antenna Group and then to Koprenikus Corporation, its content shifted more towards entertainment while quality of their news sections has lowered becoming less critical. Although has its separate newsroom, they often take the most important political news from B92 TV, while other content is mostly original.
